San Antonio with Kids: A Long-Weekend Plan

San Antonio is an unusually efficient family destination: history, a walkable downtown, and two big theme parks all sit within about a thirty-minute radius. Our Firefly Dreams home sleeps 16 across five bedrooms and puts all of it within a 20-30 minute drive.

Three days is enough for the highlights without the trip becoming a march.

Day one: downtown

Start at the Alamo in the morning, before the heat and the crowds. General grounds admission is free, though timed tickets are recommended in peak season and worth booking ahead rather than queuing with children.

The River Walk is directly adjacent, one level below the streets — a network of shaded walkways lined with restaurants and cafes. It's the easiest afternoon of the trip: lunch by the water, a boat tour if legs are tired, and back to the house before the late-afternoon heat.

Day two: pick one theme park

Six Flags Fiesta Texas is built into a former limestone quarry, which gives it genuinely unusual terrain and a strong roller-coaster line-up — the better choice if your group skews to older children and teenagers.

SeaWorld San Antonio is the largest of the SeaWorld parks and pairs marine-animal habitats and shows with rides, which generally suits a mixed-age group better. Both are about 20-30 minutes from the house. Doing one properly beats attempting both.

Day three: keep it loose

Three consecutive full days is one too many for most families with young children. Use the third for whatever the group didn't get to — the second theme park if everyone has the appetite, a return to the River Walk, or simply the pool and game room at the house.

If you're deciding between seasons: spring and autumn are considerably more comfortable than a Texas summer, particularly for a trip with as much outdoor walking as this one.

Common questions

How many days do you need in San Antonio with kids?
Three days covers the main attractions comfortably. One day for the Alamo and River Walk downtown, one for a single theme park — either Six Flags Fiesta Texas or SeaWorld San Antonio — and a third kept flexible for whatever the group missed or a rest day.
Is the Alamo free to visit?
General admission to the Alamo grounds is free. Timed tickets are recommended during peak season, and guided and audio tours are available separately for visitors who want more depth.
Which is better for families, Six Flags Fiesta Texas or SeaWorld San Antonio?
Six Flags Fiesta Texas, set in a former limestone quarry, has the stronger roller-coaster line-up and suits older children and teenagers. SeaWorld San Antonio combines marine-animal habitats and shows with rides, which usually works better for mixed ages and younger children. Both are about a 20-30 minute drive from central San Antonio.

Stay twenty minutes from downtown
